Webinar on Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) - Feb 26, 2024

CEDARS SEN Support and the Equal Opportunity Unit are jointly organizing a webinar to increase awareness across campus about support for students with special educational needs (SEN).

Part I Disability Discrimination Ordinance – Support for Students with Disabilities

The Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO) of Hong Kong seeks to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal opportunity in access to education. It is important for both teachers and administrative colleagues involved in any student-related matters to understand what may constitute an unlawful act under the DDO and how to support students with special educational needs (SEN). In this online session, Mr Clifford Lo, Senior Training Officer of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), will explain the key concepts, unlawful acts, and reasonable accommodation requirements under the DDO. 

  • Definitions of disability under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance
  • What is discrimination and harassment under the law
  • Applicable fields relevant to tertiary institutions and examples of unlawful acts in different areas
  • Supporting students with special educational needs (SEN) through reasonable accommodation
  • Sharing of cases involving students with SEN handled by the EOC

Part II  Supporting Students with SEN at HKU

As the one-stop student service and resources centre, CEDARS is committed to support students with SEN in overcoming barriers, achieving successful university education and in promoting inclusivity at HKU. In this online session, Ms Jasvinda Ng, Counsellor (SEN Support), CEDARS, will introduce the SEN Support Services and the roles of staff in supporting students with SEN.

  • What is reasonable accommodation?
  • What are the roles and responsibilities of staff in supporting students with SEN?
