Result of Equal Opportunity AI-generated Graphic Design Competition 2025

COMPETITION DETAILS

We are pleased to announce the winners as follows:

Champion: "Acts of Kindness, Seeds of Change"

Chan Tsz Hin (HKU Business School)

Theme: Create Change - Building a Campus of Compassion

The graphic places HKU's Main Building at the centre to anchor the theme "Create Change: Building a Campus of Compassion." From the building, a glowing ribbon of light flows around different groups of students, symbolising how acts of care spread across the whole campus. On the left, a student walks beside a wheelchair user, showing mobility support that respects independence and equal friendship. In the centre, two classmates pause to comfort a distressed student with listening, reassurance, and a bottle of water, representing emotional and mental health support. On the right, an inclusive study group collaborates around a tablet; a student wearing hearing aids is actively engaged while his friends turn toward him and share notes, highlighting academic and communication support for SEN students. By weaving these everyday moments together, the poster shows that building a compassionate campus is not only about formal services, but about students consistently noticing one another’s needs and choosing kindness.

Acts of Kindness Seeds of Change

1st Runner-up: "Piecing Together Our Community"

Lo Shun Ting (Faculty of Arts)

Theme: Bridge Differences - Embracing Diverse Needs

This 3D-rendered artwork visualizes an inclusive HKU campus where diversity is the cornerstone of community. Set against the iconic Main Building, a diverse group of students — including those with physical and sensory disabilities — collaborate to assemble a large, floating heart made of glowing puzzle pieces. The "puzzle" metaphor illustrates that the university community is incomplete without every unique individual. The warm, cinematic lighting and the students' joyful collaboration emphasize that bridging differences is not just about accommodation, but about active connection. By placing this scene in the heart of the campus, the design asserts that accessibility and empathy are central, not peripheral, to the HKU experience.

2nd Runner-up: "Light Bridges All: An Inclusive HKU Campus Vision"

Sung Tsz Wa (Faculty of Engineering)

Theme: Bridge Differences - Embracing Diverse Needs

This vertical oil painting reimagines HKU's campus as a fully inclusive environment where all nine categories of Special Educational Needs (SEN) are seamlessly integrated into beautiful, functional infrastructure with colorblind-friendly deep blues yellows teals terracotta. Using expressive impasto brushwork and swirling, emotionally resonant colors — techniques that echo the vulnerability and passion of artists who transformed personal experience into universal meaning — the artwork features the iconic University Hall beneath a dynamic golden-blue sky. The composition's centerpiece is a luminous "bridge of light" curving through the foreground, symbolizing connection between diverse campus communities. Along this bridge, nine SEN-support features are distinctly visible: tactile paving and a guide dog for visual impairment, accessible ramps and glass elevator for mobility, live caption screens for hearing access, sensory gardens for autism and mental health, wobble chairs for ADHD, and high-contrast symbol tablets for speech and learning disabilities. The colorblind-friendly palette ensures accessibility for all viewers. Glowing Braille text reinforces inclusion at multiple sensory levels. The artwork demonstrates how universal design creates not merely functional infrastructure, but beautiful, emotionally resonant spaces where all students truly belong.

26. Light Bridges All An Inclusive HKU Campus Vision

Viewer's Choice Award: "Harmony in Diversity: HKU's Inclusive Canvas"

Kung Long Yin (Faculty of Education)

Theme: Bridge Differences - Embracing Diverse Needs

The graphic depicts the iconic HKU campus, blending historical Main Building with modern architecture, connected by a prominent, stylized bridge. This bridge serves as the central metaphor for the theme "Bridge Differences - Embracing Diverse Needs," with the slogan boldly displayed on its structure. Below and around the bridge, diverse individuals, including those in wheelchairs and others representing a broad spectrum of abilities, are shown interacting joyfully. They are engaged in conversation and collaborative activities on benches and pathways, symbolizing an inclusive community. The blend of vector art with subtle textures creates a vibrant yet welcoming atmosphere. Warm, ambient lighting bathes the scene, highlighting the architectural blend and the harmonious interactions. This illustration visually reinforces messages of empowerment, equal opportunity, and unity, effectively portraying the campus as a place where all needs are embraced and differences are celebrated.
