A Home Away from Home: Discussions on "Sunday Beauty Queen"

Curious about Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong and the beauty pageant which they are taking part in on Sunday? Want to engage in discussions on culture harmony, feminism and queerness arising from the documentary? Join us in our event of A Home Away from Home: Discussions on “Sunday Beauty Queen"!

Co-organised by Equal Opportunity Student Ambassadors and InclusivityHK@HKU, we are bringing you a sharing session with the director of “Sunday Beauty Queen”, Ms Baby Ruth Villarama!

“Sunday Beauty Queen” is a documentary describing a group of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in their working lives in Hong Kong. In this documentary, Ms Villarama depicts the realities of livelihood as a domestic helper contrasted by their lives on Sundays off. Through the film’s portrayal of momentary glimpses of play and fantasy, audiences are offered a perspective of Filipino women celebrating their culture and individuality through a beauty pageant that transcends the challenges they are facing in reality. Watch the documentary HERE and join our discussion session with Ms Villarama!
