Preventing Workplace Harassment among Workplace Participants (Cantonese Session)

The Discrimination Legislation (Miscellaneous Amendments) Ordinance 2020 has introduced enhanced protection from sexual, disability and racial harassment for workplace participants in common workplaces, even when there is no employment relationship. In addition, the Sex Discrimination (Amendment) Bill 2020 has recently been passed by the Legislative Council such that breastfeeding harassment will become unlawful with effect from June 19, 2021.

In the University’s context, ‘workplace participants’ include HKU staff, contractors and their employees, interns, volunteers, and co-working space users, etc.

Similar to the concept of vicarious liability for an employer or principal, under the new legal provisions, a person who engaged interns or volunteers is vicariously liable for the harassment act of an intern or volunteer, whether or not the act was done with the knowledge or approval of that person.

You are cordially invited to join the training session detailed below.

Topic: Preventing Workplace Harassment among Workplace Participants
Trainer: Mr Clifford Lo, Senior Training Officer, Equal Opportunities Commission

Target Audience:
(1) Contractors and their employees;
(2) Interns;

The trainer will explain the key concepts and unlawful acts under the relevant anti-discrimination ordinances, supplemented with typical examples, and advise on how to prevent and deal with harassment in the workplace.
