EOF 2014 - Talk on “Under the Skin: The Beauty of Acceptance and Equanimity”

Skin diseases, such as acne, psoriasis and lupus are common in the population. They are rarely fatal, but could tremendously affect one’s life in all aspects. The patients not only suffer from somatic sensations like pain and itch, but also face a lot of social and psychological problems. Many of them suffer from discrimination, especially when the public, who generally believe the diseases are infectious, see the redness and inflammation on their faces and bodies.

This is a psychoeducational talk on people with skin diseases. After introducing the common skin diseases in Hong Kong, some cases will be revealed for a full picture on their difficulties and needs in social, psychological and employment aspects. Misconceptions held by the general public will be reviewed and reflected on. A group discussion will be held at last on brainstorming the ways to increase the public’s awareness on the issues and promoting their equal opportunities.

Dr Celia Chan, Assistant Professor of Department of Social Work and Social Administration, will give a talk “Under the Skin: The Beauty of Acceptance and Equanimity” on 18th November at Lecture Room 07, G/F, Main Building from 1:00-2:00pm.
