EOF 2017 - Talk on Inclusive Language

In this talk, Professor Timothy O’Leary and Dr. Aditi Jhaveri will introduce the concept of “Inclusive language”, its importance and rationale. Examples of inclusive and non-inclusive language will be discussed and their respective benefits and harms. We will discuss the importance of having Guidelines in place at HKU, for both students and staff (and the institution in general). Particular emphasis will be placed on how to raise awareness and change behaviours, without being overly prescriptive. Details of the event are as follows:

About the Speakers

Professor Timothy O’Leary is Professor of Philosophy and Member of HKU Council and a former Head of the School of Humanities. He researches and publishes in the area of contemporary European philosophy and ethics, and is particularly interested in the ways that we mould our own (and others’) behaviour in ethical ways.

Dr. Aditi Jhaveri is a Lecturer in the Centre for Applied English Studies and a Member of the Faculty of Arts Committee on Gender Equality and Diversity. She has been teaching language, communication and media courses to tertiary students in Hong Kong since 2004.
